Membership
We are actively seeking new members for our Society. Membership requirements are as follows:
Qualifications
Section 1: Any male person eighteen (18) years of age or older, who is of good moral character and reputation and is a lineal descendant of one who served during the War of 1812, in the Army, Navy, Revenue Marine or Privateer Service of the United States of America; or in the Militia of a state or territory or the District of Columbia duly called out for service between November 7, 1811 and July 18, 1815; or United States President James Madison or his Secretary of War or his Secretary of the Navy; or a Governor of a state or territory of the United States between November 7, 1811 and July 18, 1815 and who offers proof thereof that is satisfactory to the members of the Board of Directors of this Society, may become a member of this Society when approved by that Board of Directors: provided, however, that no service shall be regarded as qualifying if the person who rendered such service, voluntarily bore arms against the United States at any time between the dates of the outbreak and the ending of the War or if such person's service between such dates was terminated by a separation from the service of the United States under conditions other than honorable.
Collateral
Section 2: In order to recognize the service of those participants in the War of 1812 who have no currently living descendants, and to allow a collateral descendant, who is deemed worthy of membership, to be admitted to represent an actual participant in the War of 1812 on behalf of the United States provided that such representation shall be limited to the descendant of either a brother or sister of the participant in the war, in right of whose services application for membership is made.
Under 21
Section 3: If an applicant is under the age of twenty-one (21) but is otherwise qualified for membership, he may be elected to membership by the Board of Directors with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities of a member over the age of twenty-one (21) (including the payment of dues), except that he may not hold elective office until he has reached the age of twenty-one (21). A member under the age of eighteen (18) shall be known as a Junior Member and shall also not have the right to vote.
